This also means that even mid-way through a map, you may need to restart if you lose too many units or a key veteran unit, even if you're still beating the AI. This layer of management tweaks the combat in a way that makes it less enjoyable: Instead of just winning a map with everything available to you, you also need to focus on giving XP to certain units, rotating them between fights, last-hitting enemies, etc.įor example, if you barely beat a level with a single unit remaining, or you don't win with enough high-level units to carry over, you might be screwed. The only thing I don't like is that you have to manage units' experience between maps. Combat is deep and fun, and the maps are well-designed. Supremely satisfying to plan a strategy from turn 0 and come out on top of the challenging AI. I have tons of hours on this game from before it was on Steam. There's no better bang-for-the-buck strategy game than Wesnoth.
