After this, you can control the mixing settings for each of these sources in the Mixxx interface. The first thing you have to do with Mixxx is add the source folder containing the music files, auxiliary input, microphone etc. But if you have had your feet wet in any kind of DJ’ing before, then you will pick up real fast. For a complete novice, it might take a little bit learning before you can produce some cool mixes. It comes with a large help file that is also available on their website and explains everything from hot cues, BPM, and music keys.

Our past summer projects have included rewriting our scrolling waveform widgets, adding Shoutcast broadcasting support to Mixxx, and improving our audio mixer routing code. The application period for students begins on March 26th and ends April 6th at 19:00 UTC. We also recommend taking a peek at our page of general advice for students interested in applying.

Google Summer of Code is a global program that allows students to receive a $5000 USD stipend for writing code for an open source software project over the summer. Google has just announced the participating mentoring organizations for Google Summer of Code 2012 and Mixxx has been accepted into the program! Look for a beta release in the near future! At this point all the new features are complete and we're fixing bugs. Meanwhile, the Mixxx team is working full-speed ahead on Mixxx 1.11, which we hope to release in early June. As always, we're very grateful for Google's generosity in enabling this work. The 4 will be mentored by our mentoring team: RJ Ryan, Bill Good, Daniel Schürmann, Owen Williams, and Albert Santoni. We can't wait to get these students integrated into the Mixxx community and get their work into a release. This summer's Google Summer of Code projects will be a huge step forward for Mixxx both in functionality and polish. This includes automatic key detection using open-source key detection libraries, the ability to pitch-shift tracks on the fly, key-sync, support for multiple key notations, and more. Last but not least, Varun Jewalikar will bring harmonic mixing features to Mixxx. Here's to robots imitating DJs instead of DJs imitating robots! Scott Stewart will pick up where a previous GSoC project left off by enhancing our AutoDJ feature to mix more like a DJ rather than just cross-fading tracks. Max Linke will work on improving the Mixxx library by adding a preview player, multiple library paths, and more.

This will allow DJs to seamlessly use Mixxx with their vinyl or CD collections alongside their digital collections. Matthew Mikolay will build a pass-through mode for vinyl-control users.
